about
Popularity was recorded with Darla Hawn (drums), Aaron Stern (bass), and Andris Mattson (horns). This was written in the summer of 2020 when I had fled California and was living in a trailer in my mom's backyard. I had a lot of doubts about whether my L.A. chapter was coming to an end, and was emotionally overwhelmed by how divided my family and hometown community has become in the Trump era.
lyrics
Eight years walking into those bars
Like anything could happen
People like us in a city like this
Thinking eventually the door just opens
It’s almost the feeling of being first in line
Like your anticipation becomes some cruel design
Five years getting over the friend
Who didn’t care didn’t try didn’t love you
And you still haven’t cussed him out
‘Cause maybe feeling it is a small town point of view
You don’t know who’s just doing business anymore
And you don’t care about your popularity score
We’ve all got someone we love who swears
That Jesus is just coming back to save them
But when you try to point it out
That what they’re standing for is everything he stood against
It’s so bad it’s so unbelievably bad
That somewhere down the line we forgot
All the good things that guy said
And oh I can’t take I can’t stand another
Heartbreak heartbreak heartbreak like this
Can’t stand another heartbreak like this
So delighted that Angel is finding that "hard won acceptance" that she sought and hope that her future path is one of authenticity. This work is one marked by melodious but not overwrought emotion, striking an intuitive balance of warmth and skill. hailhumanists
Intimate and unique. This album plays well with a bottle of Syrah crunched up in your finest pair of headphones with candles lit in a steamy bubble bath. sig
