My father didn’t throw anything away. Going through his belongings was the most intimate moment I’ve ever had with someone. He had so many beautiful objects, had collected so many strange artifacts, and had lived out there in the woods with them, without internet and with barely any television. I knew he had been making paintings and sculptures for the past ten years or so, but I had only seen photos of a few of them, and was more disturbed than intrigued by them. One after the other, we started pulling these paintings from behind furniture and dusty boxes of photos. I started propping them up around the cabin. Surrounded by piles of my father’s garbage and piles of his worldly possessions, I started to see it all very differently. My father was a painter.
